Copper in Drawn Bars and Sheets
The main feature of the copper bars and sheets is the high electrical and thermal conductivity. The main use of these products is in the field of construction of electrical panels, welding apparatus, EDM and components for electrical plants and heat exchange. The production of copper bars is made by continuous casting or extrusion, with subsequent drawing process.
This last process consists in making the bars pass through a steel die with calibrated dimensions, in order to confer to the drawn Copper bars a profile with very tight dimensional tolerance (see the related tables in the technical catalogue).
The production of the Copper sheets is made by rolling the plates produced in continuous casting. The rolling process consists in dragging the material through two counter-rotating rollers with parallel axes; the space between the two rollers (channel) determines the thickness of the Copper sheet.
Copper alloys and features:
The Copper used in the electromechanical industry, civil and industrial sector, is copper with a minimum purity higher than 99.90% (except special alloys). The two different types of copper used in these working fields are Cu-ETP and Cu-DHP. The two alloys differ from each other for the presence of other components in the total maximum percentage of 0.10%, which however influence significantly the technological characteristics.
Copper Cu-ETP (Electrolytic Tough Pitch): it is the material used for the production of copper bars and copper into sheets for applications in the electromechanical field. This copper is characterized by the presence of Oxygen (O) and by the absence of Phosphorous (P) that confers a high electrical conductivity. This copper is obtained by electrolytic refining and treatment with pine trunk (treatment executed in the liquid metal to reduce oxidation).
Copper Cu-DHP (Deoxidized High residual Phosphorous): it is used for the production of copper sheets and copper tubes. It is a copper totally free from Oxygen (O), in which it is maintained (in order to stabilize and ensure the deoxidation) a relatively high content of phosphorous (P), ranging between 0,015% and 0,04%.
The presence of Phosphorous reduces the electrical conductivity but improves the cold plastic deformability and increases the attitude to brazing, making it particularly suitable for industrial applications and in the production of pipes for hydraulic systems.
