Brass in Extruded, Drawn Bars and Sheets

The production of the brass bars takes place by extrusion process, which is the compression of a billet (Brass bars produced by continuous casting) heated up to the softening state and extruded through a steel matrix which confers the metal the desired shape. After extrusion, the extruded brass bar obtained is subjected to a drawing process. This process, “cold“ executed, consists in making the bars pass through a steel die with calibrated dimensions, in order to confer to the Brass drawn sections a profile with very tight dimensional tolerance (see the related tables in the technical catalogue).
The production of the Brass sheets is made by continuous casting and further rolling. The rolling process consists in dragging the material through two counter-rotating rollers with parallel axes; the space between the two rollers (channel) determines the thickness of the Brass sheet.

Brass alloys and features:
The Brass is an alloy of Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) with variable percentages of zinc depending on the applications of the brass. In order to improve the workability by chip removal, alloys with addition of Lead (Pb) were also realized, still maintaining the main characteristics; this element, insoluble in the crystal structure of the alloy, reduces the length of the chip, the wear and tear and also the heating of the tools, extending the lifetime and the removal speed.

These brass alloys are OT.58 and OT.59 (Cu Zn39 Pb3 and Cu Zn40 Pb2); they are the most used in the production of components for the mechanical industry.

The brass plates and the brass tubes are produced in alloy OT.63 (binary alloy Cu Zn37) as they do not need any machining for chip removal.

The brass alloys with percentages of zinc variable between 36% and 45% are also easily hot machinable.
